An arcade is a range of arches supported on piers or columns. The term is also used to describe the arched division between the nave of a church and its aisles. Arcades rest on columns. The first columns would have been made of wood. They are like trees and remind us of ancient pagan beliefs and practices.. pulpit, in Western church architecture, an elevated and enclosed platform from which the sermon is delivered during a service.. Beginning in about the 9th century two desks called ambos were provided in Christian churches—one for reading from the Gospels, the other for reading from the Epistles of the New Testament. The former, which became increasingly ornate, was the forerunner of the pulpit.

The Pulpit's Golden Age. By the end of the thirteenth century, the ambo fell into disuse, supplanted by the pulpit, a free-standing structure placed in the middle of the nave. This evolution heralded the golden age of pulpit design, coinciding with the rise of the preaching orders, as well as the establishment of the universities.. In the Old Testament, we can read that Solomon preached from "a brazen scaffold" in 2 Chronicles 6:13 and that Esdras stood on a wooden step to preach in Nehemiah 8:4. Jesus never seems to have used a pulpit. In Europe during the Middle Ages, as early as 550 or 600 AD, preachers stood at a pulpit so they could be better understood.
